In the purest sense, Open Space Sessions are conversations on a topic that one person has expressed an opinion or position and others have chosen to participate in.

Open space sessions are usually associated with the ‘un-conference’ approach where people group to explore thinking, share ideas and collaborate in their shared area of interest.

For BA Development Day, Open Space is our invitation to participate in conversation where we share experience and thinking about the future of business and business analysis.  The scope for Open Space is HUGE and flexible ... a waterfall project managers nightmare!!

This is a big conference and we want to spend as much time as possible 'in' Open Space conversations so, we're taking topic submissions before the day.

Open Space Topic Submission

We're making it really easy for you to tell us what topic you want us to apply our collective thinking to.  We know getting up in front of a group of analysts causes anxiety for many ... give us a group of grumpy stakeholders to wrangle any day over presenting a concept to a group of analysts - we can be brutal in the application of our analytical thinking.

Open Space Sessions will be professionally facilitated so you don’t have to present your topic or facilitate the session...or even participate in the session if there is another concurrent Open Space Session topic that appeals more.  And you get to observe and be immersed in a professional facilitation technique.

We're expecting to get more suggestions than there are Open Space Sessions available.  Duplicate entries will be merged.  Ideally we'll go into BA Development Day with 16 topic choices.  If we have too many we will reach out to registered delegates to identify a shortlist prior to the conference.

Open Space Topic Selection

On the day you'll get four votes to cast against the Open Space Topics you are interested in joining a conversation about.  You will have two opportunities to use your votes; prior to the first round of Open Space Sessions and again prior to the second round of Open Space Sessions.

The first round of Open Space Sessions will be determined by the four topics with the highest votes after first voting period ends.  And same again for the second round at completion of second round voting.

Voted topics are handed over to professional facilitators who support your group to explore and contribute experienced and emerging thinking on the future of business and business analysis in relation to this topic.

The collective thinking of this group will be captured, published and shared with individuals and communities interested in the future of the analysis skill-set.

So, what is Open Space?

A fantastic opportunity to explore and anticipate the analysis skill-set of the future from the perspectives of experienced and emerging business analysis professionals.

Everyone needs to be able to effectively communicate.  “It’s not rocket science its simply learning how to rub people up the RIGHT way!” 

Amy Scott is fully accredited in the New Zealand made ‘Dots’ communication model and will provide great insight and understanding of this model.  You will understand your dominant dot, get a taste of some of the natural strengths of your dot and take away some excellent tips to assist in more effective communication.  This session will set you up to be able to better engage and be more aware of why people feel, think and act the way that they do – a huge head start to effectively navigate and participate in the Open Space interactive conference sessions.

Insights and Connections: The Human Capability of Sensemaking

With sensemaking topping out as the number one capability for 2020 and beyond, there is increasing interest in understanding HOW to make sense and WHAT to do with what you think, know or find out. 

In her closing keynote, Lynne Cazaly identifies how sense-making works, what to do for your field or industry and how to leverage this unique human capability so you can engage better with customers and clients, work more effectively as an organisation and deliver greater commercial benefits in these challenging times.
