The Hutt News
6th October 1998

This spectacular photograph was taken by Sarah Henry, who works at the Bellevue Hotel but who has spent several days with the Hutt News as she prepares to apply for the next journalism school intake. Sarah said that it took some time - "about 20 rings' for the call to be answered by the Fire Service after the '111' operator put it through, but firefighters were on the scene very quickly. However, there was little they could do. The 1934 grandstand was already well ablaze. "The flames took hold really fast for a big structure like that," Sarah said.

A firefighter is dwarfed by leaping flames that consumed the Hutt Rec grandstand last Wednesday.
